As most of you will know, our Chairman, Steve Wharton, is presently recuperating from recent ill health and everyone at Scunthorpe United FC wishes him a full and speedy recovery.

Although not able to attend the Club for the time being, he does keep in touch with the affairs at Glanford Park and has asked me to pen a few lines on his behalf. Following on from the historic 2006/7 season, we all knew that it would be a monumental task to maintain Championship status and, sadly, it was not to be.

Our start to the season exceeded all expectations, particularly as in the first four matches we had played and taken four points out of two matches against teams that in the previous season had been in the Premiership.

Week in, week out, we were competing with teams that in previous years we could only dream about meeting in Cup competitions and until mid-November the team was more than holding its own against its more illustrious opponents.

In many quarters it was felt that luck then began to completely desert the team and the change in fortunes resulted in the slide down the table, despite the exceptional efforts of the management and players alike as could well be seen from the performances on the pitch.

Strenuous efforts were made to strengthen the squad of players during the transfer window but on several occasions, "done deals" were snatched from us at the last moment with the targeted players opting to move to what were perceived as bigger clubs with greater potential.

Notwithstanding our short stay in the Championship, much has been learned and experience gained that will hold Scunthorpe United in good stead for the future.

Being in the Championship has been a great experience for all involved at the Club and, more importantly it is hoped, the fans too.

The support for the team throughout the season has been nothing short of magnificent, both home and away and even in the large stadiums visited with over 20,000 home fans, our supporters have never failed to make themselves well heard.

We have tasted the Championship, liked the taste and want more of it. With that in mind, attention now turns immediately to next season and to plot the earliest possible return to the second tier of English football.

May I on behalf of the Chairman and his Board of Directors take this opportunity to thank all of our fans, sponsors, advertisers, staff and helpers for all their invaluable support and assistance throughout the past season and to express the hope that we can count on their continuing support for next season in our drive for promotion back to the Championship.
