CHAIRMAN'S END-OF-SEASON MESSAGE
The 2006/7 season will go down in history as one of the most memorable, and possibly the greatest season in the history of Scunthorpe United.
Not only did we achieve promotion in our second season in League One, with three games still to go, but we lost our Manager , Brian Laws and Assistant Manager, Russ Wilcox, to Sheffield Wednesday at the beginning of November. We also sold one of our key strikers, Andy Keogh, to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the January transfer window, as he insisted that he be allowed to leave before his contract expired.
The loss of two thirds of our management team could have spelt disaster for the Iron, but it did not. Nigel Adkins picked up the reins, Andy Crosby and Ian Baraclough, without a second thought, took on the extra responsibility of Assistant Managers and all three relished the challenges that lay ahead. They, in turn, were supported by Tony Daws who took over the responsibility for the Reserve Team. Even more importantly, the whole squad of players increased their resolve to be successful and support one another. It is unfair to pick out individuals as everyone has played an important part in achieving our success but I must mention Billy Sharp's record-breaking goal scoring feat and Golden Boot Award, and Joe Murphy's possible Golden Glove award. A clean sheet today will ensure that no one can equal his record. His and Billy's contribution have been immense.
Throughout this unbelievable season every possible record has been broken; 19 games unbeaten; 7 continuous wins; 16 away games without defeat; the division's highest scorers with the least goals conceded. The most wins and the least defeats - and record breaking attendances at Glanford Park.
Throughout the season the fans have been terrific. Even when we allowed Brian and Russ to leave, followed by Andy Keogh in January, the fans did not lose heart. As the season progressed and we climbed to the top of the table, more and more supporters joined our ranks. The last few home games have been completely sold out and today will go down in history as one of the proudest days in the history of Scunthorpe United. I am certainly very proud to be the Chairman of such a wonderful football club and to have emulated my father by taking them into the second tier of English football is a dream come true.
To everyone involved at Glanford Park, I thank them from the bottom of my heart for making this the season we will all remember. I think I have said it many times before but it is so true, "if we all work for each other, we can achieve great things"
Enjoy and cherish the memories of our finest hour.
