THIS IS WHAT THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS ALL ABOUT
IronFist, an exiled Iron supporter who makes it back for every game home and away, gives us a fans perspective ahead of the clash with Sheffield United at the weekend:
Well, what a day we have in store on Saturday when the Mighty Iron visit Sheffield United.
It promises to be a brilliant afternoon, with a large following marching into the Steel City from North Lincolnshire.
The weather forecasts say the sun is going to be out and it appears most supporters are going to make a day of it, with booze likely to have a significant role to play. Don't drink and drive, kids!
It is days like this which we had in mind when we celebrated the League One title win last season.
It will be like the third round of the FA Cup, with there being more than a distinct possibility of an Iron win if things conspire for us on the day.
I, for one, cannot wait. Here is hoping it can have a similar outcome to our last match in Sheffield, when a certain Mr Laws was humbled in his new, more plush, home.
As predicted (perhaps more in hope than expectation) in this column last week, the Iron managed to pull off a 'shock' win against Charlton Athletic last week.
Kelly Youga got a decent reception from the Glanford Park support and a terrifically entertaining game ensued with two teams desperate to win giving all they had. Scunthorpe just wanted it that little more in the end and saw the victory through with ten men.
It was great to see Joe Murphy keep a clean sheet, it was fantastic to see the back four look solid, I felt the midfield worked well, while Paul Hayes and Geoff Horsfield showed promising signs in attack - with The Horse putting in a trademark barnstorming display which won much acclaim from the terrace.
Even more importantly though it was brilliant to see our leading scorer for the season, Martin Paterson, come off the bench to get back on the goal trail. He is going to be vital over these next few months as we attempt to stay up and have more great away days, like the one we are anticipating tomorrow, next season.
It is an important period for the club with the games coming thick and fast, and as supporters we need to make our mark. I am sure we will on Saturday at Bramall Lane, but we also need to pull out all the stops when we play Bristol City on Tuesday night.
If we are to stay up we need to win most of the home games remaining, as well as picking up useful points on the road. What is undeniable though is that it is achievable.
Get behind your team and have a great weekend.
Up the Iron!
IronFist
