TURN UP FOR THE LADS!
Gary Willerton provides us with the latest of our www.scunthorpe-united.co.uk fan blogs:
Saturday, May 5 2007, a day that will live long in the memory of Scunthorpe United supporters young and old.
Having secured an against-the-odds promotion a few weeks previously, and winning the title just the week before, Scunthorpe capped quite possibly the most successful season in their history by beating Carlisle United 3-0 in front a packed Glanford Park, with 8,720 people making for an unbelievable ovation as Andy Crosby lifted the League One championship.
The success the team achieved brought many new fans to the ground and also brought many fans back for an emotional reunion.
Fast forward 10 months, to a dark, cold, wet and windy Tuesday night. Play-off hopefuls Plymouth Argyle are the visitors to a very different Glanford Park. After the disappointing trip across the Humber on Saturday the outlook for the Iron looked bleak. If ever there was a must win game, surely this was it.
Imagine my disappointment to be given the final attendance figure of 4,920 people. Nearly 4,000 less then the Carlisle game. Surely, surely the Iron need their fans singing and shouting more now then they did back in May.
I know that last season was amazing, unbelievable and every other superlative you can think of, but the effort the boys have put in since the trip to Charlton on the opening day has also fitted that description and, at least in my opinion, they deserve to have full houses of cheering, passionate fans to every game they have remaining.
So, remember the days gone by, but lets start cheering for the future as the club that we love try to preserve its deserved Championship status.
Up The Iron!!
Gary
