A Martin Paterson brace helped secure a magnificent away win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Scunthorpe went behind to a Deon Burton penalty midway through the first half but soon hit back through a Paterson double later in the opening period - and comfortably held on for all three points.

The Iron made one change from the side that drew 0-0 at home to Leicester City on Saturday - with Cleveland Taylor making a return to the starting eleven.

He replaced Jonathan Forte in the team as boss Nigel Adkins kept faith with the rest of the team from that game.

Forte was named on the substitutes' bench, with Marcus Williams also making a return to the 16 - replacing Jack Cork.

The game saw Owls manager Brian Laws pit wits with his former Scunthorpe charges for the first time since leaving the club almost 12 months ago.

Also lining up against the Iron for the first time since departing Glanford Park was Wednesday defender Richard Hinds.

A large following arrived from North Lincolnshire in anticipation of a fine performance from their side, wearing all-white, but it was the home team who forced the first shot of the game inside two minutes when Burton O'Brien drifted into the penalty area from the right and planted his shot well over the crossbar.

The Iron were passing the ball around well, even if they were lacking a cutting edge in the early stages.

The next chance came the way of the Owls' O'Brien, again, who turned on the edge of the box and fired in a shot that was always drifting wide of Joe Murphy's top left-hand post.

Wednesday came even closer on 11 minutes when Marcus Tudgay's shot from the edge of the area went just wide of the same post. The home side were firing out a warning of their intent.

In terms of shots, it was all Sheffield Wednesday as winger Jermaine Johnson had their next chance. He fired wide of Murphy's left-hand post though.

Scunthorpe attacked with purpose but still couldn't find that defence-splitting pass, and it was the home team who were to go ahead on 23 minutes.

Glenn Whelan went down inside the penalty box amongst a melee of Iron legs - with Kelly Youga judged to have got the decisive touch, and referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the penalty spot.

Up stepped Burton, to sent Murphy the wrong way and fire into his top left-hand corner.

However, the lead wasn't to last and just two minutes later United were level.

Jim Goodwin's free-kick into the penalty box was headed across goal by Andy Butler on the left of the penalty area and there to convert home at the far post was Paterson.

And he came close again on 29 minutes when he turned on the edge of the penalty area to flash a shot just wide of Lee Grant's right-hand post.

The Owls were dealt a blow five minutes later when Richard Wood was substituted with a nasty-looking injury after his challenge on Paterson. Wood was replaced by club captain Lee Bullen as Laws was forced to change around his tactics.

And it wasn't long before United took advantage and went ahead as, on 40 minutes, Paterson struck again.

He received the ball 30 yards from goal and passed the ball to Taylor wide on the right. The winger then advanced forward before sending a cross into the box which Paterson thumped home at the far post to mass jubilation from the Scunthorpe faithful. It was his seventh goal of the season.

The home side had lost their way and United were taking advantage, as Andy Butler headed just over from a Kevan Hurst corner in the stroke of half-time.

It proved to be the last chance of the opening period as the visiting side went in ahead.

Iron summer transfer target Akpo Sodje was introduced to the fray by the Owls in the second half as Laws replaced the goalscoring Burton with the imposing presence of the former Port Vale man.

The opening exchanges of the second period saw the home team piling on the pressure, but Scunthorpe defended resolutely as Wednesday struggled to create, and in turn frustrated their supporters.

The United army behind the stand Nigel Adkins' men were shooting towards during this half were in full voice as their team continued to hold on.

Lightning fast winger Jermaine Johnson had the Owls' first real chance since their goal on 65 minutes but he blazed high and wide of the goal after seemingly doing all the hard work to get into the penalty box.

Scunthorpe had their first chance since the restart on 70 minutes when Paterson burst into the box and his shot was tipped out by Grant for a corner.

Then, from the subsequent set-piece by Hurst, Butler powered a free header in on goal, which was just cleared to safety by the Owls.

The Iron made their first substitution of the night two minutes later when Hayes was replaced by Forte. His introduction would add fresh legs to the United frontline as they looked to attack on the break.

Tudgay and Glen Whelan both fired wide from distance for the home side before United then two changes in quick succession with Matt Sparrow being replaced by Williams and on-loan targetman Ben May coming on for Paterson.

Wednesday may have had most of the possession in the second period but they still struggled to create anything of substance as the Iron comfortably cleared anything thrown at them and held on for three points that take them to ninth in the table.

Scunthorpe are next in action on Saturday when they visit Cardiff City.
