A stoppage time double from Paul Hayes sealed the Iron's route into the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the expense of Notts County at Glanford Park.

Richard Butcher's strike on nine minutes seemed to have won the game for the Magpies' with one of their only chances of the match.

The Iron were dominant but lacked the clinical cutting edge shown in the 3-0 win at Stockport on Saturday.

However, Hayes' late brace from close range clinched the win for Nigel Adkins' men, who find out their opponents for the second round on Saturday morning.

Ahead of the game, the Iron made five changes from the side which beat the Hatters at Edgeley Park.

Manager Nigel Adkins opted to rest a number of his squad, with Josh Lillis coming in for Joe Murphy between the sticks.

The defence consisted of stand-in captain Cliff Byrne, David Mirfin, Krystian Pearce and Marcus Williams.

Matt Sparrow lined up on the right wing in place of Garry Thompson, while Ian Morris came in for Sam Togwell to partner Grant McCann. Martyn Woolford replaced Kevan Hurst on the left wing. Ben May started up front alongside Hayes, with Gary Hooper rested.

The substitutes' bench were Sam Slocombe, Michael Lea, Jonathan Forte, Andrew Wright and Hooper.

Former Iron striker Jamie Forrester missed out for Notts County through illness, while Neil MacKenzie was on the bench.

Scunthorpe got off to a slow start, with the away team enjoying the better possession going forward.

They were rewarded nine minutes in when Richard Butcher connected with a Ben Fairclough cross to volley a low effort past Josh Lillis at his bottom left-hand post from the edge of the penalty area.

The Iron weren't exactly quick to respond, and had their first shot of the game when May headed McCann's cross into the box over the crossbar from close range.

Woolford's stinging shot tested Hoult, as Scunthorpe began to dominate the rest of the half. McCann then curled a deflected free-kick wide as the Iron pressed for an equaliser before half-time.

May went close with another header, this time drawing a save from Hoult.

Then Williams' powerful effort from the left-hand side of the penalty area skimmed the crossbar. Scunthorpe were the better team towards the end of the half, but still went in a goal down at the interval.

The hosts had their first chance of the second period on 49 minutes with Sparrow curled his effort against the crossbar from 30 yards. It was the closest Scunthorpe had come thus far, and they stepped up their pressure - with the wingers whipping balls into the box which drew scrambles in the away penalty area.

Morris then fired a strike over the crossbar following one of those aforementioned periods of pressure as Scunthorpe continued to threaten.

They made their first chance of the night on 66 minutes when McCann was replaced by Forte. Sparrow switched to the centre of midfield to accomodate the Iron's extra attacking dimension.

Scunthorpe were still having the better of the game, but weren't clinical enough in attack - struggling to turn their possession into clearcut chances.

Former Scunthorpe man MacKenzie came on for his first appearance back at Glanford Park, since leaving after the club's promotion to the Championship last summer, on 70 minutes.

Two minutes later Facey could, and should, have put the visitors out of sight, but his header from close range cleared the crossbar after good work by Fairclough.

May then headed wide for the Iron on 78 minutes after Sparrow's corner from the left found him in space 12 yards from goal.

There was to be another change for the hosts when top scorer Hooper came on for Mirfin as Scunthorpe switched to three in attack.

They came close again on 86 minutes when Sparrow's volleyed effort took a deflection wide for a corner.

Forte had a great late chance to level affairs, but his volleyed effort after a Woolford cross was only partially cleared went just wide of Hoult's bottom right-hand post.

Scunthorpe weren't finished though, and finally equalised in the first minute out of four of stoppage time. Hayes got on the end of a Morris corner from the right to head the ball past Hoult at the back post. It was Hayes' second goal of the season, and the Iron's 16th corner of the night.

A penalty shoot-out loomed, but the Iron were far from finished yet and Hayes netted again - forcing the ball over the line after May's volleyed shot after a goalmouth scramble drew a great point-blank save from Hoult.

It was deserved, and United will play in the second round on the week beginning Monday, October 6.

The Iron are next in action on Saturday when they visit Brighton and Hove Albion in the league.

Attendance: 1,755 (129 away).
