Iron manager Nigel Adkins has explained his decision to release midfield man Jim Goodwin.

The 26-year-old was the shock absence from Adkins' retained list, as three players departed Glanford Park for definite.

"Jim was finding it very difficult any way with the travelling this season," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"Early on he had moved to Bradford and then moved back to Manchester.

"And he's got family in Scotland, so he was finding it increasingly difficult, but that's by the by.

"It's very good that we have still got a lot of players still under contract and we are looking forward to next season."

Kevin Horlock and Alex Morfaw also left the club.
