Iron boss Nigel Adkins says he expects the uncertainty over the future of left-back Marcus Williams to last the whole summer.

The talented defender is out of contract, but Scunthorpe have offered him a new deal.

However, it is no secret that Williams has high ambitions, and he is likely to take his time finding the right deal.

Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside that there was nothing the club could do about it but wait.

Should Williams move to another club, United will receive a transfer fee because the player is under 24.

His agent Nick Rubery told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "Marcus is considering a new contract offer from Scunthorpe.

"Negotiations have been going on for a while now and the last conversation I had with the club was last week.

"There's a good possibility he's going to stay at Scunthorpe. We're looking to tie that up at the moment.

"Marcus wants to play at as high a level as he can, but, at the end of the day, Scunthorpe have indicated to me they want to keep hold of him.

"At the moment he's assessing his options and his contract offer from Scunthorpe.

"I think in the next couple of weeks he's going to make his mind up with what he wants to do."

Meanwhile, acting chairman Rex Garton has confirmed to BBC Radio Humberside that Burnley are interested in striker Martin Paterson, as reported in Sunday's News of the World, but they are yet to register an offer.
