United boss Nigel Adkins has urged his supporters to turn up the volume and create a cauldron of noise when his team take on local rivals Hull City in the Humber derby on Saturday (12noon kick-off).

The Iron face the Tigers for the first time in more than three years and a victory can see them overhaul their neighbours from across the river in the Championship table.

It promises to be a magnificent fixture against Phil Brown's in-form City and Adkins is calling on 'The Twelfth Man' to force their home advantage and be in full voice in what will be a packed Glanford Park.

"On Saturday, our supporters have got an opportunity to sing for the whole game," said Adkins, speaking in his pre-match press conference, which is now showing on Iron World.

"They know it's going to be a competitive game, there's going to be a lot of passion out there and we've got an opportunity to out-sing the Hull supporters, and thoroughly enjoy the whole occasion - sing, enjoy it and be passionate about it.

"When was the last time Scunthorpe played Hull in the second tier of English football? I would suggest it was probably in the sixties. It was a lifetime ago, it's a lifetime since this club was where it is now and we want to stay here. Our 'Twelfth Man', the supporters, is vital to us."

Adkins is excited about the game and knows his side face a tough challenge against the Tigers.

Their squad has been expensively-assembled and, prior to the international break, they were coming into a run of form. United will be looking to end it in style this weekend.

He added: "We played Sheffield United and beat them, we played Sheffield Wednesday and beat them. We haven't been overawed by anybody we've played yet - I think we've given a fantastic account of ourselves.

"I've been fortunate enough to be here for the last 11 years and have been party to some really cracking Humberside derbies. Saturday's will be no exception, it's going to be very fast, very frenetic, and will be a million miles an hour.

"Hull are a very fit side, we're a very fit side. The ball's going to be zipping around everywhere and the referee is going to have to keep up with play."
