Boss Nigel Adkins hopes his side can rekindle the spirit they showed on the opening day of the season when Charlton Athletic visit Glanford Park on Saturday.

The two teams locked horns at the Valley in August and Scunthorpe claimed a shock draw against the promotion favourites.

A bullet header from Izzy Iriekpen cancelled out a disputed goal from Marcus Bent, as United supporters enjoyed a memorable day in South East London.

And Adkins is confident his team can upset the odds again and claim another notable scalp against Alan Pardew's side this weekend.

Speaking on Iron World, Adkins said: "On paper, we should not get anywhere near them.

"On paper, when we went down to Charlton on the first day of the season, we should not have been anywhere near them - but we got a fantastic draw and on the day we might have even got a win out of it.

"We are looking forward to it. There should be a full house at Glanford Park to watch us play Charlton, who were a Premiership football club. That is where they expect to go back into.

"They have got great players. They play some great football.

"(Former Scunthorpe loanee) Kelly Youga is going to return, so that is going to be interesting because he did ever so well for us.

"We should look forward to it and relish the challenge, not be frightened of it."
