Charlton Athletic manager Alan Pardew says his side will have to dig deep if they are going to get anything from Glanford Park on Saturday when they meet United.

The Addicks are chasing promotion, while the Iron are battling to survive - but Pardew is full of respect for the way Scunthorpe chief Nigel Adkins has got his team playing.

He told Charlton's official website: "We all have our own degrees of success as managers, and survival for them would be success.

"I think Nigel Adkins has done a terrific job as manager. It's a tough place to go still, although recent results haven't been going for them.

"I don't think there's ever a good time to go to a team that works as hard as Scunthorpe.

"They haven't got the resources we have, but they can certainly match us in terms of work-rate and commitment. So if we fall short in that department, then they will win.

"Their initial enthusiasm for getting in the division has been ground out by the quality and strength in the league. But they've still got a great chance of survival."

Meanwhile, Pardew is thankful to the club's coaching after staff after witnessing Kelly Youga's coming of age as a player during his loan spell in North Lincolnshire.

The defender returned to the Valley from a six-month stay with Scunthorpe at the start of January and has been a first-team regular since.

Pardew added: "Kelly definitely improved there. The manager did a terrific job with him and I would have no hesitation in sending my players there again."
