HALES ON TARGET AS RESERVES DRAW
In-form attacker Jamie Hales netted three minutes before the half-time break to hand the reserves a share of the spoils in their final game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.
The youth team player had scored twice in the second string's win over Barnsley a week earlier, and added to that at Glanford Park on Monday evening.
He had the first chance of the night on six minutes, but drove his effort wide of the right-hand post.
Scunthorpe then had a decent shout for a penalty turned down when what looked like a handball in the penalty area was not given.
23-year-old Simon Wiles. on trial from Blackpool, then had his first chance 14 minutes in but headed over the crossbar. The midfielder showed pace and vision, crossing the ball well and creating opportunities for his side.
United stopper Craig Turner was forced to save with his feet from an Owls attack on 26 minutes, and then made another superb stop a few moments later.
The visiting side won a penalty on 39 minutes when left-back Jonathan Walton lost the ball and then won it back in his own area. The referee judged it to be foul play though, and the Owls converted the spot-kick - sending Turner the wrong way.
Just three minutes later though, the Iron levelled.

Jamie Hales sends the ball past the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper. |
The referee stopped play for offside, realised he had received a faulty signal and forced a drop ball. United won it, and Ben Porter crossed for Miles Smith, who fed the ball through the defence to Hales, who slotted past the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper.
There was just one more chance before the half-time break, when Wiles shot across goal.
The second half was a quieter affair, however.
Jake Picton, who featured on the bench for the first team at Watford on Saturday, headed over the crossbar from a corner on 79 minutes, while man of the match Turner made a cracking stop six minutes later.
Moments after that, the Owls hit the left-hand post, and the home team had one last chance when Hales was sent clear through but shot wide.
All in all, it was a decent point for Scunthorpe, who have lost just one game since the turn of the year.
