NORTH WEST TRIP ON THE CARDS
Posted on: Mon 19 May 2008
United face the prospect of another trip to the North West next season after Rochdale and Stockport got through to the League Two play-off final.
They will battle it out for a place at Wembley next Monday after victories at the weekend.
Dale needed penalties to see off Darlington at Spotland, after winning their second leg 2-1 to even the tie on aggregate.
Following a star performance from former Iron defender Nathan Stanton, Keith Hill's side won 5-4 in the shoot-out to progress to Wembley - handing them an opportunity to exit the bottom division for the first time in 39 years.
It could be the first time United have faced Rochdale since the 2004-05 season, when Brian Laws' team won 3-1 at Glanford Park on the opening day of the campaign and then drew 0-0 at Spotland as the campaign was reaching a dramatic climax.
Another ex-Scunthorpe defender will feature at Wembley in the form of left-back Michael Rose, after his Stockport team defeated Wycombe 1-0 at Edgeley Park to send them through 2-1 on aggregate.
The Iron haven't come up against the Hatters in the league since 1991, when they lost 5-0 there on the final day of the season. United had won 3-0 against them earlier that campaign.
The divisional play-off finals are as follows:
Championship
Saturday - Bristol City v Hull City
League One
Sunday - Doncaster Rovers v Leeds United
League Two
Monday - Rochdale v Stockport
