BRIGG TOWN 0-2 SCUNTHORPE UNITED
Jonathan Forte netted twice as the Iron ran out 2-0 winners in their first pre-season friendly at Brigg Town on Tuesday night.
The striker came on as a second-half substitute and notched within two minutes, latching onto a Kenny Milne header, to poke past the home 'keeper.
He then finished the game off on 90 minutes, slotting home from just inside the penalty area.
In all, it was a comfortable win for Scunthorpe, who now have four friendly matches remaining before the big kick-off against Leeds United on Saturday, August 9.
The Iron fielded two completely different sides in either half, and all concerned can be satisfied with their displays.
There were no knocks either, which proved another positive for boss Nigel Adkins.
United started well, winning a succession of corners in the opening stages before the hosts cleared.
The visitors created a number of half-chances, with Ben May and Paul Hayes proving threatening, while Garry Thompson and Joe Wilcox linked up well on the right flank.
Two trialists started the game, with left-back Michael Lea getting forward well, and central defender Sam Oji having a relatively easy ride alongside skipper Izzy Iriekpen at the back.
Andrew Wright, playing well against Brigg boss and former Iron midfield man Steve Housham in central midfield, tested the Zebras' goalkeeper with a volley. Peter Winn then had a piledriver tipped over the crossbar as Scunthorpe had the edge in the opening period.
The hosts were industrious at times, and had a couple of decent chances towards the end of the first half before Garry Thompson fired wide just before the interval.
With the first-half side warming down at half-time, and the second period team warming up, Scunthorpe entered the second period fresh - and didn't take long to take advantage, as Forte slotted home.
Australian trialist James Sherman, playing in central midfield, had an effort tipped over the crossbar on 56 minutes while the lively Forte continued to test with a couple of efforts.
Gary Hooper showed good touches alongside Forte in attack, while Kenny Milne was strong at the back. The former fired just wide after capitalising on a defensive slip-up.
The hosts rarely threatened, although they could have perhaps sneaked an equaliser with better reactions from their forwards towards the end.
Forte then finished them off with 90 minutes on the clock as the Iron successfully started their 2008-09 pre-season.
They are next in action on Saturday when they visit Doncaster Rovers.
