SCUNTHORPE UNITED 0-2 SHEFFIELD UNITED
Goals from Sheffield United strike duo Danny Webber and Darius Henderson sealed a 2-0 pre-season success against the Iron at Glanford Park.
Things were even in the opening half, but the Blades struck just after the break through Webber, and finished the match off through Henderson four minutes before the end.
The hosts had a few chances but never really got going in the North Lincolnshire sunshine.
Josh Lillis started in place of the injured Joe Murphy for the Iron. The defence consisted of Cliff Byrne, Izzy Iriekpen, Kenny Milne and Marcus Williams. Lining up in midfield for the warm-up game were Garry Thompson, Matt Sparrow, Grant McCann (back from a foot injury) and Kevan Hurst. Meanwhile, Jonathan Forte started the game alongside Paul Hayes in attack. Sitting on the substitutes' bench were Gary Hooper, Michael Lea, Andrew Wright, Peter Winn, Jake Picton, Ian Morris, Ben May, plus youth team pair Niall Canavan and Ross Hyslop.
Iron legend Billy Sharp lined up in attack for the Blades, who started the better team. The front two of Billy Sharp and Jonathan Stead kept Izzy Iriekpen and Kenny Milne on their toes but they were struggling to create any clearcut chances.
Eleven minutes in, the home side had their first chance of the afternoon, with Hayes heading wide after a cross from Hurst on the left.
Played very much like a friendly, there were few opportunities. Scunthorpe had their best one of the first half so far on 17 minutes when Forte sidefooted an effort over the crossbar after being put through by his strike partner Hayes.
Sharp - who was taken off at half-time - flashed a low effort wide for the away side from the edge of the penalty area, and that proved to be the closest they came all half. Gary Speed fired wide from 25 yards but, those two instances apart, Nigel Adkins' team controlled things.
Scunthorpe made one switch at the interval, with McCann being replaced by Morris in the centre of the home midfield.
The visiting team started the second-half the brighter side, and took the lead on 47 minutes through Webber, who got on the end of a cross from debutant and fellow substitute Darius Henderson to head past Lillis.
Five minutes later, Kevan Hurst came ever so close to levelling in spectacular style, dribbling past his man to curl an effort just wide of Kenny's top right-hand corner.
Henderson could have doubled the lead on 63 minutes when he rounded Lillis but, after stumbling, the Scunthorpe custodian got down well to save his low, powerful effort.
There was another cluster of changes by the hosts a minute later, with May and Hooper replacing Hayes and Forte.
Sparrow came on for Wright and Lea - making a home debut - replaced Williams shortly after as the game petered out.
Henderson finished the game off with four minutes left on the clock, turning to fire past Lillis in the home goal.
There was still time for one more change by the hosts, when Winn replaced Thompson.
There was no time to have an impact though, as referee Graham Laws blew for full-time moments after.
Attendance: 2,507 (836 away).
