Classic Match

This week in 1999 saw arguably the most dramatic match ever staged at Glanford Park, as the Iron took on Swansea City.

The atmosphere on May 16 was electric for a play-off semi-final second leg with the Iron a goal down from the previous encounter three days earlier at the Vetch.

Scunthorpe raced into a second minute lead through Andy Dawson's long-range drive and the two teams then played out a tense stalemate for the rest of the 90 minutes and then 'super-sub' Gareth Sheldon took centre stage.

He sent the Iron's support into dreamland as he fired home from a John Gayle knockdown right at the beginning of extra time.

But joy sooned turned to agony for the Iron as the Swans, backed by 1,000 fans from South Wales, levelled the scores on aggregate and scored a vital away goal.

Tony Bird converted home following a corner, but Scunthorpe kept going and almost straight away Dawson burst down the left and crossed for Sheldon who diverted the ball past 'keeper Roger Freestone and sent Brian Laws' men into jubilation.

John Eyre was sent off but the Iron held on and celebrated a famous victory, with the Iron supporters invading the Glanford Park pitch afterwards.

Their reward was a trip to face Leyton Orient in the final at Wembley and we all know what happened there!
